Gadget Time / Windows can play an important role in a home’s energy efficiency and influence climate change

A quality window can play an important role in protecting the home against severe weather conditions, ensuring water tightness, wind and impact resistance, thermal insulation and noise reduction. It is important to choose quality windows suitable for our environment and to maintain them properly to reap these benefits.

Here are some things to consider when it comes to windows and their impact on climate change:

  • Thermal insulation: Energy-efficient windows can help reduce heat transfer between the inside and outside of a home. This can help maintain the optimum indoor temperature in winter and reduce the need to use heating to compensate for heat loss. On the other hand, poorly insulated windows can allow heat loss during the cold season, leading to higher energy consumption and an increase in greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Energy efficiency: Double glazed windows, with high energy performance glass or with an argon layer between the panes can help reduce energy consumption for heating and cooling the home. These windows can reduce heat transfer through the windows, which can reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production of electricity or thermal energy used for heating and cooling.
  • Solar radiation control: Windows can influence the amount of solar radiation that enters the home. South-facing windows can allow a significant amount of solar radiation in during the winter, which can help naturally warm the home and reduce the need for heating. On the other hand, windows facing west or east can allow a large amount of solar radiation to enter the home during the summer, which can lead to overheating and increase the need for cooling.
  • Use of natural light sources: Windows can provide a natural light source in the home, which can reduce the need for artificial lighting and, by implication, the associated electricity consumption. Efficient use of natural light through windows can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production of electricity used for lighting.
  • Choosing sustainable materials: The materials used in the manufacture of windows can have an impact on climate change. Opting for windows made from sustainable materials, such as wood from certified sources or recycled aluminum, can help reduce gas emissions
  • Watertightness: A quality window should be watertight to prevent water from entering the home during heavy rains or storms. A watertight window can protect your home from possible water infiltration that can cause damage to walls, floors, furniture and other belongings.
  • Wind resistance: In areas with strong winds or during storms, a quality window must be wind resistant to prevent damage or breakage of the window and to prevent cold or damp air from entering the home. This can help maintain thermal comfort in the home and reduce the need to use heating or cooling.
  • Impact resistance: Severe storms or hail can cause damage to windows and penetration of foreign objects inside the home. A quality window made of impact-resistant materials such as laminated glass or safety glass can provide protection against impact damage.
  • Noise reduction: A quality window can also provide protection against outside noise such as road traffic, construction noise or other sources of noise pollution. This can help create a quiet and comfortable indoor environment.

Gadget Time / What are the benefits of psychological assessment of children in education

Psychological evaluation of a child involves a detailed and professional process to understand in depth the needs, capacities and psychological state of the child.

Psychological assessment of children

The problems children face can vary from generation to generation due to cultural, technological and social changes. Thus, psychological assessment must keep pace with the new challenges of life and the specific needs of children of each generation. In this context, it is advisable that the psychological assessment be carried out by qualified and accredited psychologists who are able to adapt to these changes. The correct psychological assessment adapted to the new challenges of life is crucial to give children the support they need, which is why choosing an accredited and competent psychologist is an essential step.

  • Purpose of evaluation: Psychological evaluation of a child can have various purposes, such as diagnosing mental disorders, evaluating development and school performance, identifying special educational needs, planning therapeutic interventions, or assessing aptitudes and interests for educational and vocational guidance.
  • Varied Methods: Assessment of children may involve a range of methods and tools, including clinical interviews, psychological testing, behavioral observation, developmental assessments, aptitude assessments, and emotional state assessments.
  • Involvement of parents: Parents have an essential role in the assessment process of their child. They can provide valuable information about the child’s history, his behavior at home and in social contexts.
  • Holistic assessment: Psychological assessment of children should be a holistic assessment, taking into account cognitive, emotional, social and behavioral aspects. This should take into account the family, school and social environment of the child.
  • Professionalism: Psychological assessment of children should be carried out by qualified professionals such as clinical or school psychologists, psychiatrists or other child mental health specialists. It is important to adhere to ethical and professional standards during the evaluation.
  • Communication and interpretation: The results of the assessment must be communicated clearly and comprehensibly to the parents or other persons responsible for the child. Interpretation of the results should provide a thorough understanding of the child’s needs and provide recommendations for appropriate interventions.
  • Confidentiality and respect: Information obtained during the assessment should be treated with confidentiality and respect for the rights and privacy of the child and family.

The psychological assessment of children is much more complex than issuing a simple certificate.

The result of a psychological assessment for children, even if it was requested to complete a specific file, is an important signal for parents.

  • Identifying the child’s problems or needs: The results may reveal specific problems or needs of the child, such as mental health disorders, learning difficulties, delayed development or others. This information can serve as a signal for parents to seek help or appropriate interventions.
  • Guidance for intervention: The assessment can provide parents with recommendations for interventions or treatments to help the child overcome identified difficulties. This can be a signal to act in the right direction to give the child the necessary support.
  • Deeper Understanding: Assessment can help parents better understand their child’s behavior, thoughts, and emotions. This can help improve communication and the relationship with the child.
  • School or therapeutic planning: Assessment results can influence decisions about the child’s education and therapy, such as choosing an appropriate school or specialist therapist.

Gadget Time / How can you protect yourself from Alzheimer’s disease

The methods to prevent Alzheimer’s Disease are not complicated. They are activities that we should do normally, without thinking of them as therapeutic methods to prevent any disease. You don’t need a psychologist to teach you such simple things. They are as simple as they are important. They can change our lives and ensure a beautiful old age.

Alzheimer's Disease

In recent years, we have been facing a constant increase in the level of stress. We don’t even have enough time for the usual activities. The problems we are facing are getting more and more serious. Established at work. Economic instability. Social instability. Climatic changes. Technological development. Artificial intelligence. What can we do? How can we protect our health? How can we prevent it Alzheimer’s Disease?

Contrary to opinions expressed in certain online communities, the methods of preventing this disease do not require the presence of a psychologist. It is true that a psychologist can recognize certain symptoms specific Alzheimer’s Disease and recommend a specialized treatment, but his presence is not necessary in prevention activities. We repeat. The following prevention suggestions are for the prevention period. In the situation where you are already facing an advanced state of the disease, we recommend that you urgently consult a psychologist.

1. Sleep is an investment. It helps you gain healthy years at the end of life and prevent Alzheimer’s Disease.

Health and how much you sleep are two interrelated aspects. The latest research has made the connection between the difficulties faced by certain people in falling asleep with the risk of developing dementia or even the risk of death. The risk of developing dementia doubles in people who sleep 5 hours or less, compared to those who sleep between 7 and 8 hours a night. It seems that there is also a connection between how efficiently we sleep and how often sleep is interrupted, with the risk of developing various health problems.

This study had 2,610 participants who in 2013 and 2014 answered a questionnaire, with questions related to how alert they are during the day, how often they toss and turn during the day, how long it takes to fall asleep at night, how much they sleep in total and whether he snores or not. The study was longitudinal, so the psychologists who followed the participants collected data again, five years later, from the subjects or their relatives.

The results show that if it takes you more than 30 minutes to fall asleep, in general, after the age of 60, you have 45% more chances of developing dementia; if in general you can’t keep your alertness, you often fall asleep during the day, and you sleep 5 hours or less a night, you will be prone to diseases of a nature that will reduce your life expectancy.

It is not very difficult to change the quality of your sleep and ensure a healthier old age. It helps you sleep better if, first of all, you give yourself time: time to develop a routine every evening, which at fixed times will teach your brain to prepare for sleep and help you relax; time spent outside, especially in the early part of the day, in which to sit in natural light, to adjust your internal clock; and finally time to go to a specialist: to a doctor to get your tests done to see if there is a physical problem that doesn’t let you sleep (mineral deficiencies, hormonal problems and many others) and time to go to a psychologist to talk about the thoughts that don’t let you sleep.

2. It smells nice and retains the smell

The University of California conducted a studye to establish the link between the sense of smell and memory, and at the end of the study the participants’ cognitive ability, measured by a memory test, increased by 226%.

It happened to all of us to smell a certain smell that evokes a very strong memory from the past: vanilla that reminds us of Saturdays in the family when cookies were baked, the floral perfume of your mother that you smelled with every hug, or burnt rubber associated with emotions the first hours of driving. The sense of smell is directly linked to the memory circuit.

The research used women and men between the ages of 60 and 85 without memory problems, who were given an aroma diffuser, and seven different aromas, made up of seven natural oils. The control group was given the same oils but in much smaller quantities. The experimental group used one scent in the evening, every night at bedtime, for 2 hours, while they slept.

The participants reported that they slept better, and the results of the imaging investigations show a better integrity of the part of the brain that makes the connection between the temporal lobe and the prefrontal cortex that is involved in decision-making, and that becomes weaker with age.

Older studies have shown how the loss of the sense of smell is correlated with the development of psychiatric and neurological diseases (Alzheimer’s, various dementias, Parkinson’s, schizophrenia and alcoholism), and there is even a study that exposed patients with dementia to 40 smells a day, and the conclusion was that their memory and language improved, and their depressive symptoms were reduced.

3. Never stop learning

If you learn more at once, your cognitive functions improve; to fight cognitive decline you have to adopt the attitude of a child, to search, explore, learn, not only new information, but especially new skills, Rachel Wu, a psychologist from the University of Riverside, tells us.

In the Gerontology journal, the Psychological Sciences section, an article was published that says that an independent and healthy old age is earned by learning in an environment with an encouraging attitude. There are already studies that demonstrate that learning new activities (photography, acting) cognitively develops older adults, only that these studies focused on one activity at a time.

More recent research asked a group of adults between the ages of 58 and 86 to attend classes, between 3 and 5 classes per person for 3 months, an average of 15 hours per week, just like when you go to school. The subjects learned Spanish, learned to use a tablet, learned photography, painting and took music composition courses. Several types of memory and cognitive control were measured, and after only a month and a half they obtained scores similar to adults 30 years younger.

4. Lifestyle is more important than the aging process

If you know what you can change and you know what the risks are, you will be more motivated to make changes that will help you later in life and ensure a healthy old age.

Studies show that lifestyle is more important than the aging process itself. And the lifestyle can be summed up in these 8 factors: education level (a level of education lower than 12 classes is a factor that affects your brain), hearing loss (if the hearing problem requires prosthesis, and you do not use your prosthesis) , a brain trauma suffered at a given time, abuse of alcohol or other substances, hypertension, smoking (currently or in the last 4 years), diabetes and depression.

A study conducted on 22,117 subjects between the ages of 18 and 89 shows that the presence of a single factor damages your cognitive functions and ages your brain by 3 years. And subjects who do not present any of the 8 factors seem to have brains as healthy as those 10 or 20 years younger than them.

5. Volunteering is good for the brain

Volunteer activities are associated with better cognitive functions, especially with better episodic memory and better executive functions. These are the results of a study presented at the 2023 International Alzheimer’s Association Conference in Amsterdam.

Voluntary activities to provide help in the field of education, in religious life, in health or with any other charity association, help you to be more physically active, to have more intense social interactions and stimulate and protect your brain from dementia. Volunteering keeps you involved in society, helps you not to feel isolated or useless, and in the end the benefit is for everyone, both for you and for society.

In this study,, it was concluded that people who volunteer their services and time several times a week have the best scores on executive functions, and the researchers want to further investigate how mental health is related to cognitive functions. and volunteering activities.

6. Stay in the sun

According to a study conducted on 12,388 participants in Canada and Great Britain, there is a link between vitamin D supplementation and the onset of dementia symptoms. The study participants, with an average age of 71 years, did not have dementia at the time of enrollment in the research, and 37% of them were taking vitamin D supplements.

The participants were evaluated again after 10 years, and the results show that far fewer of those in the group taking vitamin D developed symptoms of dementia, and clinical signs appeared much later in life, especially in women taking vitamin D D. In this group there are 40% fewer cases of dementia.

7. Brush your teeth

Researchers have discovered that gingivitis could play an important role in the development of Alzheimer’s. Following some DNA studies, it was discovered that the bacteria that causes gingivitis can migrate from the mouth to the brain where it produces a protein that destroys nerve cells, which further leads to memory loss and finally Alzheimer’s.

The researchers pointed out that the simple presence of the battery does not lead to Alzheimer’s, but it greatly increases the chance that the respective person will develop memory disorders, and speeds up the disease process, because the bacteria in question produces a dangerous enzyme. 53 patients with Alzheimer’s were analyzed, and this enzyme was present in 96% of them. Considering that the enzyme that this bacterium produces is what destroys the nerve cells in the brain, this means that the treatment of the disease can be approached from another angle, the target being precisely the blocking of this enzyme.

Brush your teeth and use dental floss, and if you have gingivitis in the family and a history of Alzheimer’s, go to the dentist regularly, not only will you look better, but you will also prevent Alzheimer’s.

Who needs a psychologist to be able to brush their teeth before going out dancing in the sun with their loved one?

Gadget Time / Young people of new generations are more involved in conserving biodiversity around their homes

We see an increased tendency among young people of the new generations to accept and support biodiversity around the house. New passive house projects contain elements that contribute to protecting the environment and local ecosystems.

conserving biodiversity

The young people of the new generations are more open and better informed about environmental and biodiversity issues. Easy access to information through the internet and environmental education in schools helps them understand that biodiversity conservation is just as important as passive house design and construction.

Young people are more concerned about the impact of climate change on the planet and understand that biodiversity conservation is one of the keys to reducing this impact. Analysis of the losses recorded in recent years due to extreme weather phenomena helped them to realize the importance of a stable ecosystem. A passive house built in an area exposed to climate change is at risk of total loss regardless of the performance of personal protection systems.

New generations are increasingly interested in organic gardening and creating sustainable living spaces for plants and animals. They learn to create biodiversity-friendly environments around their homes and frequently participate in communities that promote environmental conservation.

Passive houses are buildings designed and built according to the principles of passive architecture, which aim to minimize energy consumption for heating and cooling the building. These buildings are designed to maximize energy efficiency and thermal comfort, using strong insulation, effective room sealing, high-performance windows and doors, controlled ventilation, and other design strategies.

Using a thermally efficient ventilated facade as part of a passive house can contribute to better thermal insulation and heat transfer control. This helps to reduce heat loss in the cold season and heat accumulation in the warm season, thus contributing to a comfortable indoor environment and reducing energy requirements for heating and cooling.

A well-designed ventilated facade integrated into a passive house can provide controlled ventilation and efficient removal of moisture and condensation. This helps maintain a healthy indoor environment with good air quality.

Ventilated facades can be made of durable materials with a long service life, which contributes to the overall durability of the building. Combined with the principles of passive architecture, they can create sustainable buildings with low resource consumption in the long term.

It is important that the integration of ventilated facades in a passive house is done properly, taking into account aspects such as air tightness, thermal insulation, controlled ventilation systems and the overall design of the building. At the same time, it is important to pay attention to the correct design and management of ventilated facades, including to promote biodiversity and ensure that they are sustainably integrated into the urban environment.

Thanks to the effective collaboration between specialists in architecture, sustainable construction and biodiversity, the new passive house projects contain elements to protect local biodiversity.

The new generations have learned how to share the house with the birds. The methods of developing one’s own comfort are now complemented with techniques to protect biodiversity. Each homeowner shares the space with a tree, a plant, an insect, a bird, a pet.

Ventilated facades can be designed to provide spaces for plants, including the establishment of vertical gardens or the use of support systems for climbing plants.

This can create additional green space in the urban environment, providing food and shelter for insects, birds and other small animals.

The choice of suitable plants for the ventilated facade can be made according to the ability to attract and support pollinating insects such as bees and butterflies. Plants that produce flowers or fruits can provide food for these insects and help maintain pollination and diversity within the urban environment.

Planting specific species of climbing plants or using special support structures can create an environment where insects can take shelter. The choice of plants is made depending on the aesthetic aspect and the desired utility. Experts in exterior design are forced to complete their studies with elements from biodiversity in order to be able to recommend the best solutions.

On the ventilated facades or near them, artificial nests specially designed for different species of birds can be installed.

These can be placed in suitable gaps or spaces, giving birds a safe place to build their nests and raise their young. Ventilated facades may include dedicated structures for supporting bird nests. These can be in the form of plates or special structures that provide a protected and safe place for nesting.

Certainly these nests will require additional maintenance in the areas where they are located.

  • Noise: Bird nests can be noisy, especially during the breeding season. This can disturb the inhabitants of the house, especially if the nests are located very close to windows or areas where people rest.
  • Bird droppings: Nests can lead to the accumulation of bird droppings near the house. These droppings can be aesthetically unappealing and contain harmful chemicals.
  • Diseases and allergies: Bird droppings can contain pathogens that can cause diseases or allergies in humans. It is important to maintain proper hygiene around bird nests.
  • Building destruction: Nests can cause structural damage to buildings if they are built in inappropriate places or if the birds are too numerous.

But, the expenses for this maintenance are insignificant compared to the advantages that the presence of bird nests near us has for our health.

According to recent studies, we are facing an alarming increase in cases with mental problems. Their treatment is very expensive and long-lasting. If you knew that the presence of a bird’s nest near the front door would help you avoid such treatment, would you accept it and take care of it? Prevention is cheaper and more convenient than treatment.

Watching birds in their nests can be a relaxing and educational activity. Here are some advantages of this activity:

  • Relaxation: Watching birds in their natural environment can have a relaxing effect on people. It’s a wonderful way to escape from everyday stress and connect with nature.
  • Education: Watching birds in their nests can provide learning opportunities. You can learn more about the bird species that populate your area, their habits, breeding seasons and more. It’s a great way to educate children or connect with nature.
  • Ecological awareness: Through bird watching, people can develop a greater awareness of the environment and the importance of conserving natural habitats. This can lead to a more responsible attitude towards the environment.
  • Applying knowledge: Bird watching can help you understand the connection between birds and the ecosystem in which they live. This can give you information on how to help protect the environment and natural habitats.

To make bird watching more enjoyable, you can place bird nests in strategic places in the garden or on the terrace of the house. Using binoculars or a bird book can help you identify bird species and better understand their behavior. It’s a great activity for anyone who loves nature and wants to enjoy the world of aviation in their own backyard.

Instead of watching a YouTube channel with nature recordings, you can watch the neighboring bird’s nest. There is a diverse range of video cameras that can be placed in bird nests. There are also bird nests with built-in video cameras, specially designed for those who are passionate about these activities.

I saved another example for last. And you can do the same. Try. We guarantee that you will feel extraordinary and you will thank us.

Gadget Time / How to mount an aluminum window without compromises

Installing a no-compromise aluminum window requires only the refusal to make these compromises and the willingness to work with a team of professionals, obviously at a higher total cost.

We feel that avoiding compromises in the installation of an aluminum window requires various technological equipment. It’s just an illusion. In a poorly prepared team, these equipment can only be simple objects to support the offer. Using them to their true potential requires a high level of training and long-term experience, situations that are increasingly rare. The mere presence of expensive equipment in the equipment of the team chosen for the installation of the aluminum window is not a proof of the quality of the installation.

Installing an uncompromising aluminum window requires honest and constructive collaboration between the architect, the site manager and the carpentry team. As a manufacturer of aluminum doors and windows, we offer a full range of services – consulting, measurements, design, manufacturing, mount and maintenance.

The experience of 30 years in this field has confirmed to me the fact that most mistakes are made from the first phase, namely – during measurements. For this reason, we must ensure that the dimensions of the carpentry have been taken correctly and responsibly.

At this stage, especially in the case of carpentry on several sides, it is checked whether the right angles necessary for the correct joining of the profiles have been respected. In the situation where you have opted for a project with modern elements, we recommend that we be contacted by the architect or the site manager from the project stage to communicate the details and safety elements specific to this category of work.

Builders, in order not to repair the glazing bars twice, recommend postponing this stage after the windows have been installed. I always recommend that the jambs be straightened before the windows are installed. It is recommended that all frames be straightened before measurements. Where the situation warrants, I recommend that final measurements be delayed until all errors have been corrected despite all external pressures.

From the moment the measurements were taken for execution, we take full responsibility for the quality of the window.

You, as the beneficiary, want the window to be flawless in the end, and not helplessly stand by in the face of a dispute between the teams involved in the construction. Overlooking certain construction errors will implicitly lead to the need to compensate for them by the windowing system – an option that is not always possible or involves certain compromises.

This is the first decisive moment. This is the time when we recommend identifying all construction errors and correcting them. This is the moment when we recommend to say no to compromises and to take responsibility for every decision. In practice, each team of builders tends to hide their own errors knowing that they will be corrected by the next team. The next team, in the desire not to increase the total budget with additional expenses, pretends not to see them. After the aluminum window is installed, the beneficiary has the opportunity to measure certain distances himself.

aluminum window

This is when all errors are easily visible. We believe that every team that measures for an aluminum window has the obligation to identify and communicate all construction errors in the building. At this stage we can discuss high-performance technological equipment and the level of training of the team. Fortunately, there is a wide range of equipment that allows us to quickly measure certain distances and angles.

The second decisive moment is the choice of materials used. By materials used we mean the profile model used to manufacture the window, the glass model and the window mounting system. The choice of materials by customers is largely the responsibility of those who proposed them. It is our duty as professionals to explain to you what the performance differences are for the proposed materials. Most bona fide buyers do not know the technical characteristics of the goods they are paying for. They believe in the recommendations of so-called professionals. For a professional carpentry installation, we need the best quality materials.

We recommend not making compromises when choosing the window profile for your home. It can have positive consequences for energy efficiency, safety, comfort and quality of life inside the home. It is important to invest in a high quality profile. An insulating glass that meets all your needs and ensures a comfortable and sustainable home in the long term. Quality joinery, such as double glazed windows and doors, plays a crucial role in maintaining the internal temperature of the home. It will ensure adequate thermal insulation, thus reducing the subsequent costs of heating and cooling the home.

Assembly with polyurethane foam or metal preframes.

Using polyurethane foam for the installation of aluminum joinery, from our point of view, is not the best solution. There are carpentry fitters pros and cons. We avoid installing aluminum joinery using polyurethane foam as much as possible. Reports received over time have confirmed to us that when the lid is not closed tightly, the polyurethane foam degrades and loses its insulating properties. The only advantage of polyurethane foam is the low cost, the speed of installation of the joinery and a minimum level of training of the assembly team.

The pre-frames are installed in advance in the area where the aluminum window frames are to be installed. They are recommended for places where the masonry has low resistance and are installed in the thermal insulation area of the house. The fixing of the pre-frames will be done before the installation of the thermal insulation and the fixing of the pre-frames will be done directly on the wall with screws. The sealing of the joints between the pre-frame and the aluminum joinery will be done with pre-compressed strips. The choice of pre-compressed strips is made according to the width of the profile and the joint between the window and the pre-frame.

Installing an uncompromising aluminum window requires honest and constructive collaboration between the architect, the site manager and the carpentry team.

An aluminum window made of a performance profile, installed incorrectly, will cause problems in a short time. The maximum quality of installing an aluminum window is the result of the collaboration between all the teams involved and not the team that installs the window. This collaboration does not depend on the technological equipment in the endowment, but on the willingness of each team to collaborate with the other teams.

Even if a quality installation involves several steps and a zero tolerance for compromises, the advantages obtained will be significant.

More details on how to install an aluminum window without compromise I posted on banualumin.ro

Newly available on the Cisco Full-Stack Observability Platform, Cisco Secure Application helps organizations secure development and deployment of cloud native applications by bringing application and security teams closer together.
Connects business context with security findings, bringing together application performance data with security intelligence from Cisco’s industry-leading security products.
Uniquely delivered by Cisco, business risk observability helps IT professionals locate, assess and prioritize risk and remediate application security issues based on potential business impact.

Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) announced the availability of Cisco Secure Application (previously Security Insights for Cloud Native Application Observability) on the Cisco Full-Stack Observability Platform, enabling organizations to bring together application and security teams to securely develop and deploy modern applications. The latest release of Cisco Secure Application helps customers to securely manage cloud native applications in addition to hybrid applications.

In the race to deliver seamless digital experiences, IT teams have experienced an increase in the need to shift to modern, distributed applications, but according to a recent Cisco study, 92% of global technologists admit that the rush to rapidly innovate and respond to the changing needs of customers has come at the expense of robust application security during software development 1.

This has left companies exposed to security vulnerabilities and threats, with larger attack surfaces and gaps in their application security layer caused by siloed teams both struggling to gain visibility and the right business context to prioritize vulnerabilities. As a result, organizations are reporting an explosion of security incidents in the modern environment, putting customer data and the reputation of their business at risk.

To help organizations secure cloud native applications, the new Cisco Secure Application offering – now available on Cisco’s recently launched Full-Stack Observability Platform – arms customers with expanded visibility and intelligent business risk insights across cloud environments, empowering businesses to better prioritize and respond in real-time to revenue and reputation-impacting security risks and reduce overall organizational risk profiles.

Cisco Secure Application integrates with Cisco’s industry leading security products and enables customers to:

Locate and highlight security issues across application entities, including services, workloads, pods, containers and business transactions, and isolate them at speed.
Prioritize issues with a business risk score that combines application performance data and business impact context from Cisco’s own Cloud Native Application Observability, with real-time vulnerability detection and security intelligence from Cisco’s security products, to identify which business transactions present the greatest risk.
Accelerate response time to security incidents with real-time remediation guidance, complete with prescriptive actions to prioritize and address the most impactful security vulnerabilities.

“Application security has never been a more pressing priority for businesses, and traditional vulnerability scanning solutions simply don’t provide the information that teams need,” said Ronak Desai, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Cisco Full-Stack Observability and AppDynamics. “An organization’s ability to quickly assess risks based on potential business impact, align teams and triage threats is entirely dependent on understanding where vulnerabilities exist, the severity of those risks, the likelihood they will be exploited, and the risk to the business of each issue. This business risk observability can help IT professionals understand and prioritize those risks and is uniquely delivered by Cisco. The availability of Cisco Secure Application on the Cisco Full-Stack Observability Platform is a critical next step in our commitment to providing customers with the tools they need to deliver unmatched and secure digital experiences across hybrid and multi-cloud environments.”

“The successful digital infrastructure must operate as a concert – not as a collection of separate products, providers, and people. This requires all components – from core to edge, from network to applications, from on-premises systems to public cloud and communications services – to work as one to deliver the best digital experiences,” asserts Mark Leary, Research Director, IDC. “Cisco’s extensive domain experience across hybrid and multi-cloud environments and comprehensive full tech stack oversight positions the company well to help customers bring application observability, security intelligence data, and business risk observability together. Combined, they give customers access to the critical information they need to make smart decisions about their application security.”

Gadget Time / Dell Technologies and University of Limerick Join Forces to Advance Predictive and Diagnostic Cancer Research

Dell Technologies AI platform drives predictive and diagnostic research in oncology at University of Limerick
Project to help speed up the diagnosis of B-cell lymphoma and provide enhanced treatment for those with the disease

Dell Technologies (NYSE:DELL) has joined forces with the University of Limerick’s Digital Cancer Research Centre to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) platform and digital twin technology to power predictive and diagnostic research in oncology.

The technology can help clinicians provide more effective cancer care for those with B-cell lymphoma from speeding diagnosis to providing enhanced treatment and improving long-term outcomes for patients in Ireland and worldwide.
Dell created an AI platform for the University that delivers high performance computing power to accelerate oncology and precision medicine research. The platform sits within the Digital Cancer Centre’s multicloud ecosystem. It is powered by Dell’s latest storage arrays and Dell PowerEdge servers optimised for AI to produce cancer patient digital twins for better diagnostics.

With the new AI platform, researchers can:
Rapidly accelerate biomarker testing for cancer,
Gain a better understanding of how to treat patients with B-cell lymphoma, and
Develop personalised therapies based on a person’s tumour characteristics.

By using emerging technologies, researchers at the Digital Pathology Unit at the University of Limerick’s Digital Cancer Research Centre can also better understand the pathogenesis of these malignancies and develop novel therapeutic approaches. The researchers are particularly interested in the possibility that collagen within the tumour ‘microenvironment’ can cause the cancerous cells to spread around the body and to the central nervous system. Having already identified novel ways to block collagen, the research could lead to new treatments to help cure patients before the tumour spreads.

“Through our partnership with the Dell Technologies team, we will be able to advance our knowledge of how cells go wrong during cancer development and find new ways to diagnose and treat cancer patients,” said Paul Murray, professor of molecular pathology at the University of Limerick and scientific director of the Digital Pathology Unit at the Digital Cancer Research Centre. “This is the beginning of a very exciting research project for the team here at the University of Limerick’s Digital Cancer Research Centre, and we’re looking forward to accelerating this project with the digital support and insights from the team at Dell Technologies.”

“The new AI-driven platform developed by Dell Technologies will ultimately help researchers and healthcare professionals deliver precision treatments for patients with B-cell lymphoma by understanding how it develops,” said Catherine Doyle, managing director, Ireland, Dell Technologies. “Through the creation of these digital twins, the University of Limerick and Dell are taking clinical research to a new level. Together, we are harnessing the power of data through new technologies to benefit patients and healthcare professionals globally.”

Gadget Time / P5P Unveiled: The Powerhouse Vitamin You Might Not Know

Vitamins and minerals are the unsung heroes of our bodily functions, ensuring that every little process, from the very cells to our most complex systems, operates smoothly.

Vitamin

Among these, P5P, a version of Vitamin B6, stands tall yet somewhat unnoticed. Here’s an in-depth dive into this vital nutrient.

1. Understanding the Basics

What is P5P? Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate, or P5P as it’s affectionately called by experts, is the active form of vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 itself comes in several forms, but it’s P5P that’s directly used in the body’s biochemical processes. Think of it as the MVP in a team of star players.

2. The Science of P5P’s Multifaceted Benefits

  • Bodily Functions: So, you might be wondering, what does P5P do for the body?. The answer is — a lot. It’s pivotal in over 150 enzyme reactions. From aiding in the breakdown of amino acids to producing neurotransmitters, P5P is like the busy backstage crew that ensures the show goes on without a hitch.
  • P5P and Brain Health: Neurotransmitters are chemicals that enable brain cells to communicate. P5P plays a significant role in the synthesis of these chemicals, indirectly supporting cognitive functions and mood regulations.
  • Balancing Hormones: One standout feature of P5P is its role in managing hormone levels, particularly prolactin. Questions often arise about how much P5P to lower prolactin or how long for P5P to lower prolactin. While studies suggest that P5P can modulate prolactin levels, the specifics are individualistic. It’s akin to tailoring; what fits one might not fit another.
  • An Array of Health Benefits: But what is P5P good for aside from the above? P5P is involved in haemoglobin production, ensuring that oxygen is effectively transported in our blood. It also aids in maintaining brain health, fostering strong immunity, and even assisting in the conversion of food into energy.

3. Diving into Dosage and Daily Needs

  • Determining the Right Amount: The perennial question about any supplement or vitamin is, how much should one take?. For P5P, adults generally need 1.3 to 2.0 mg daily. However, factors like age, gender, and health conditions can modify this.
  • P5P and Prolactin Management: When looking to manage prolactin levels with P5P, it’s essential to be cautious. Questions like how much P5P for prolactin and how much P5P should I take can best be answered with a healthcare expert’s guidance.

4. Exploring P5P Supplements

  • The P5P Supplement Landscape: While some might get their P5P dose from foods, others might need supplements. These offer a targeted, concentrated form of the nutrient, ensuring the body gets what it needs.
  • Choosing Wisely: As with anything we ingest, quality matters. When selecting a P5P supplement, it’s vital to pick one that guarantees purity and potency.

5. >Delving Deeper: P5P in Foods and Dietary Sources

While supplements are handy, nature also provides. Foods rich in Vitamin B6, which the body can convert to P5P, include chicken, turkey, tuna, salmon, cheese, lentils, brown rice, carrots, and walnuts. It’s like Mother Nature’s own little apothecary.

6. Cautionary Tales: Side Effects and Overdose

Every silver lining has a cloud. Excessive intake can lead to nerve damage or cause painful skin patches. It’s always crucial to ensure that intake, whether dietary or supplemental, stays within recommended limits.

In Summary:

P5P, a shining star in the vast galaxy of vitamins, holds the key to myriad bodily functions. From ensuring our brain processes smoothly to playing a pivotal role in metabolic activities, its significance is hard to overstate.

Gadget Time / How to pay very little for the electricity consumed at the office or at home

The decrease in the budget allocated to the payment of the consumed electricity can be obtained with investments in renewable technologies and in devices with high energy efficiency

Investing in the purchase and installation of photovoltaic panels is a long-term investment. Even if it seems a bit high at first, in the long run the profit is guaranteed. The decrease in the budget allocated for electricity bills, at a time when electricity consumers have multiplied and have an active duration in continuous growth, contributes in the first phase to the amortization of the investment and then to the constant increase in profit.

The evolution towards a technological lifestyle based on the excessive use of electronic devices has led to an increase in the demand for electricity. This phenomenon is known as “increased electricity consumption” or “increased energy demand“. Causes of increased electricity consumption may include:

  • technological development: A wide range of technologies, from personal devices to industrial infrastructure, require electricity to operate. An increase in the number and complexity of these technologies can lead to an increase in electricity consumption.
  • economic growth: In general, a growing economy means that there are more businesses and consumers using more electricity to power their operations and activities.
  • lifestyle change: people spend more time in air-conditioned spaces, use more electronic devices, household appliances and other equipment that require electricity. Also, increased mobility can lead to greater use of electric vehicles.
  • urbanization: Population growth in urban areas often leads to increased demand for electricity to power homes, commercial buildings, transportation systems, and public services.
  • TV and online entertainment: Streaming services, online entertainment platforms and video games require connections and electronic devices that use electricity.
  • industrialization and commercialization: Industries and businesses use electricity for manufacturing, lighting, cooling, and many other operations.
  • improving living standards: People are looking for more comfort and modern conveniences, which may involve using more devices and technologies that consume electricity.

The financial success of many companies and organizations today is increasingly tied to the adoption and implementation of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency practices. They are beneficial from an environmental point of view, but also a strategic financial solution for businesses, local governments and families. Passing on existing technological opportunities for fear of high electricity bills only postpones the inevitable. The solution consists in choosing equipment with maximum energy efficiency and adopting solutions that eliminate the burden of electricity bills.

Initial investments in renewable technologies and energy efficiency measures may seem large, but in the long term they can lead to significant savings in energy bills – savings that can be used for other investments, in the case of economic agents, or for education and health, in the case of families. Each person’s time is extremely valuable. It can be protected with the help of technology. But the technology requires electricity. What do we choose? Are we giving up some equipment for fear of the price of electricity consumed? Or are we looking for solutions to continue using them but at a low price? We chose the second option.

Gadget Time / How to do SEO on your personal social media account on social networks

When they say SEO most people think of promoting a web address in search engines or social networks. They want that web address to appear before their direct competitors. Very few people use reverse SEO. Search engines and social networks to show them high quality information more often. Information to help them improve.

Since this obsession with protecting personal data in the online environment began, no one has explained to us what we have to lose if we continue to choose an extreme. No one came forward to explain to us that the future always belonged to those who quickly adapted to new tools and not to those who isolated themselves behind temporarily effective protection systems.

In the absence of reliable information about the difference between personal data and cookies, many people have chosen to isolate themselves online. They installed various protection programs and became mere observers. Interact with a small group of people. I don’t like. I don’t write comments. Do not distribute. I’m watching. I read. I call them “simple observers”. They call themselves “discreet people”.

If you are interested in this topic, I think you already know what a cookie is. Out of respect for my time and yours, I will dwell on just one detail. I believe that no matter what online protection measures you take, some information about your behavior in front of the monitor will still be transmitted. They will be retrieved anonymously in order to generate certain statistics. Nobody cares that individual X at a certain address is interested in personal development. But the ratio of watchers to thinkers is extremely valuable information. Only the collection of information of low importance can be blocked.

Do you know you can use your online history to your advantage?

The expression “like attracts like” is also valid in the online environment. If you are among the lucky people who have a certain passion in your online friends directory are people who have the same passion. Correct? Share information. You support each other. Discuss the new appearances. The new appearances? Have you ever watched how you hear about new releases? Did you read with friends? Have you read in certain websites? Or have you found what a social network has shown you based on the information it knows about your passion?

Let’s take an example. Among a community with the same passion, an extremely interesting piece of information appeared. It generates thousands of discussions. But no one in your community has a connection to that community. You do not know about those discussions. You will only know when someone in your immediate vicinity hears and posts a message. But what if your online history is public and contains data about this passion? The social networks you are active on will definitely recommend that news to you. You will be among the first to know.

We were urged to beware. I recommend that we become friends. I recommend that we become allies. Let’s learn how to use new technology tools to move forward together.

At the public level, the data collected in the online environment is used to recommend information of maximum interest. An information. A road to the destination. A restaurant. A school. Everyone who uses these tools effectively has an advantage.

SEO on personal social media account on social networks

The most important thing is to be active and interact with people with whom you share passions. Give up the attitude of a mere observer. Start giving thanks. With a like. With a comment. With a distribution. The more you interact with certain people, the more often your messages will be posted to their feed and the more often their messages will appear in your feed. The more you interact with posts about a certain topic, the more your passion will be known.

If you constantly use an online search engine, I recommend you to be connected to your personal Google account. You will be surprised by the differences in the display of results. The clearer our online profile is, the closer the results we get will be to what we want. Current SEO of websites is increasingly based on the profile of the person looking for a certain information.

In an increasingly competitive market, every detail counts. We are simultaneously providers and consumers of information in the online environment.

Gadget Time / Step-by-step education is an effective principle in the learning process

Step-by-step education is an effective principle in the learning process because it allows building a solid foundation of knowledge and skills before moving on to more complex concepts.

This is a basic principle in many teaching methods and can be applied in homeschooling to ensure a solid understanding of the subjects. By gradually introducing more complex concepts, you will increase your child’s confidence and proficiency in the areas of study. Here’s how you can implement a step-by-step approach to homeschooling:

  • Start with the basics: At the initial stage, focus on the basics in areas such as math, language and science. Make sure your child has a clear understanding of basic concepts such as addition, subtraction, reading and writing, grammar structures, the fundamentals of science, as well as basic geography and history.
  • Gradual increase in complexity: As your child gains confidence and mastery of the basics, you can gradually introduce more complex concepts. Build on existing knowledge and expand topics to more advanced levels. For example, in math, you can move from addition and subtraction to multiplication and division.
  • Relate topics to each other: Help your child make connections between different topics and areas of learning. For example, show how mathematics applies to science or everyday life. This can help to consolidate knowledge and understand how topics are interconnected.
  • Project-based learning: Instead of approaching subjects only theoretically, encourage your child to learn through projects and hands-on experiences. Projects can be based on the child’s interests and passions and will help them apply knowledge to real situations.
  • Flexibility and adaptation: Every child has their own pace of learning, so be flexible in your step-by-step approach and adapt your learning plan to your child’s individual needs.
  • Constant support: Make sure you provide constant support and encouragement throughout the step-by-step education. Every progress and effort deserves appreciation to stimulate interest and desire to learn.

Step-by-step education

By taking a step-by-step approach, you will build a solid foundation of knowledge and create a positive learning environment that will foster your child’s continued development.

Before introducing a more complex concept, make sure there is a connection to the child’s prior knowledge.

As the child progresses and strengthens his knowledge base, it is important to provide him with new challenges by gradually introducing more complex concepts. This will help them develop their critical thinking, problem-solving skills and broaden their horizons in their areas of interest. Each child has their own pace of learning, so try to understand the child’s developmental level and interests. That way, you can tailor the content and activities to his needs and abilities.

It is advisable to provide examples and practical applications for complex concepts so that children can see how they apply in real situations. This will facilitate his understanding and motivate him to learn more.

Pay attention to the child’s reaction and adjust the pace of learning according to his needs and comfort. Sometimes you may need to revise or add more time to understand a complex concept. Some more complex concepts may take more time to understand. Be patient and supportive in his learning process.

Homeschooling allows children to progress at their own pace without the pressure of keeping up with a standardized school curriculum.

The homeschooling program can be tailored to fit each child’s pace and learning style. Parents can identify their child’s strengths and interests and create a personalized learning plan, which can lead to more effective and satisfying learning progress. The homeschooling process involves constant interaction between parents and children during learning. This can strengthen the relationship between parents and children and create a more trusting and caring environment.

Homeschooling allows great flexibility in setting the daily learning schedule. This allows children to organize their time around their own needs and have time for other activities such as sports, arts or volunteering. Children involved in homeschooling learn to manage their time and develop self-discipline and self-motivation skills that can be useful in the long run.

Encourage children to explore society, nature and technology

In homeschooling it is essential that parents encourage children to explore society, nature and technology, as these experiences bring significant value to their development. Here’s why it’s important to address each of these aspects:

Encouraging children to explore society means familiarizing them with the community and culture around them. This can include city tours, visits to museums, libraries, parks and other cultural or historical places. These experiences can give children a broader perspective on the world and foster understanding and respect for cultural diversity.

Learning in nature has significant benefits for children’s development. Nature trips, hiking, camping, and outdoor activities provide opportunities for children to discover their environment, understand ecosystems, and develop a deeper connection with their environment. These experiences can help develop a sense of responsibility and love for nature and promote a healthy lifestyle.

Technology plays an increasingly important role in our lives, and children need to understand how to use technology responsibly and creatively. Thus, encouraging technology exploration can involve learning to use computers, the Internet and other devices to access information and develop practical skills such as programming or graphic design.

These real-world experiences complement academic education and provide opportunities for children to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations. It also helps develop social skills, improve communication skills and cultivate a global perspective on the world.

Parents can play an important role in stimulating these explorations by being guides, facilitators and partners in children’s learning. It is important to support and encourage them to be curious, ask questions and explore the world around them so that they become independent and aware learners.

Gadget Time / Shrubs, trees and lawns near the house contribute to improving thermal comfort in the home

Trees and shrubs near the house provide natural shading, which can reduce direct exposure to sunlight and cool the area. The dense foliage of trees and shrubs can block some of the solar radiation and reduce excessive heating of the walls and windows of the house.

The heat island effect refers to rising temperatures in densely populated urban areas as a result of asphalt and concrete surfaces absorbing and retaining heat. Lawns and vegetation around the house help to reduce this effect, as the soil and vegetation absorb less heat than asphalt surfaces, contributing to a lower temperature around the house. Plants, including turf, have the ability to absorb water through their roots and release it into the air through transpiration. This plant transpiration process can help cool the air around them, creating a cool feeling around the house.

Vegetation near the house, such as trees and shrubs, plays an important role in filtering pollutants from the air and improving its quality. This is a great added value during the heat wave, when air pollution can be more pronounced and affect air quality. A healthy lawn and well-maintained vegetation can help conserve water by holding moisture in the soil. This can be particularly beneficial during times of drought or heatwave when water resources are limited.

To get the most out of these advantages, it is important to take care of the plants near the house. Make sure trees and shrubs are well maintained, watered properly and trimmed regularly. As for the lawn, make sure it gets enough water and is mowed regularly.

Plant a tree near your house today and you will be happier tomorrow

Trees can act as a natural barrier against traffic noise or other sources of noise pollution, thus providing a quieter and more pleasant atmosphere around the house. They provide shade during the summer, thus reducing excessive heating of the house and the surrounding land, and can improve the thermal insulation of the house in the cold season. Planting a tree can attract various species of birds, insects and other animals, thus contributing to the biodiversity of the area and creating a more balanced ecosystem.

Getting a child involved in planting a tree can have long-term benefits for both them and the environment. This educational and emotional experience can help develop an ecological awareness and responsibility towards the environment, thus encouraging a more positive attitude and involvement in nature conservation.

Planting a tree provides a great opportunity to teach your child about natural cycles, plant growth processes and the importance of ecology in general. During this exercise, the child can understand how ecosystems work and the importance of conserving natural resources.

By getting involved in planting and caring for a tree, the child will learn responsibility and the importance of caring for the environment. Long-term tree care, such as watering and cleaning, will teach it to engage with and care for nature.

Planting a tree can give a child a special emotional connection with nature and the environment. While the tree grows, the child will have the opportunity to observe the changes and enjoy its progress, thus creating a special connection with nature.

Getting involved in a tree planting project can help build a child’s confidence and skills. Participating in a concrete project and seeing the tree grow because of his efforts can give him a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction.

Planting a tree can be a symbolic act of the lasting legacy we leave to future generations. The child will have the chance to see the positive impact it has on the environment and can continue the tradition of planting trees and taking care of nature in the future.

It is recommended to consult a forestry specialist or a landscaper for proper advice on planting trees near the house. It’s important to make sure you don’t plant trees with aggressive roots too close to your home’s foundation, underground pipes or power lines to avoid potential problems in the future.

Gadget Time / How to select free homeschool science resources

Looking for free homeschool science resources? Choose resources that are appropriate for your child’s age and level of understanding.

free homeschool science resources

There are a variety of educational projects on the Internet that present engaging content for learning various science topics. There are educational websites, online learning platforms, educational YouTube channels, educational games and apps, printables. The increasingly efficient online tools have led to an increase in the effectiveness of online educational projects. Children understand scientific experiments much more easily and follow their desire to explore under the supervision of a teacher with whom they interact directly.

Combining technology with scientific experiments in the educational process can better prepare children for an ever-changing world and help them develop skills and abilities essential for their future success. Using technology in science activities allows children to become familiar with digital tools, learn to search for information and use applications and programs relevant to science. The educational system based on a single source of information has confirmed its limitations. An open educational system, in which children are encouraged to explore, can prepare them for a future in which digital skills are increasingly important in almost all fields of activity.

Free homeschool science resources are equally addressed to parents who have chosen this form of education for their children, but also to teachers who intend to improve their pedagogical techniques.

How to select free homeschool science resources

The traditional education system is based on uniformity. A school curriculum was designed based exclusively on the age of the children and not on their ability to understand. In a period when there was only one source of information, the differences between children were very small. Nowadays, children have a very wide range of options. Each choice inevitably leads to a new difference.

For example, this situation was visible when children were forced to attend online school recently. Children who had access to technology adapted quickly. Children who did not have access to the Internet faced real problems.

The limitations of the traditional education system have determined more and more families to choose homeschooling. Every parent wants the best for their child. But, in order to help them, we have to learn how to choose free homeschool science resources. Are we ready to choose the best resources? Do we know the advantages and disadvantages of each option? Are we ready to accept uncertainty?

One of the most frequent mistakes encountered in the homeschooling environment is the obsession with following a school program. Under the pressure of the administrative system, the tendency to make children uniform was maintained. At a certain age, the child must know certain concepts. He must be able to answer a list of questions. Unfortunately, the demands are so many that the children are left without time for the development of personal passions or for direct socialization with other children of the same age.

Want to learn how to select the best free homeschool science resources? We can help you. But you have to answer one question – what previous experiments have you done together with your child? In order to be able to choose the most effective resources, you need to know what your child’s level of understanding is. Here is the secret. The secret and the difference between the two education systems.

A parent who follows the evolution of his own child knows what level of understanding he has reached. Follow each step and gradually raise the level of details and complexity. He always chooses educational resources based on the child’s level of understanding and not on his age. The school curriculum remains an orientational role without pressure.

When the child was small, you held his hand until he learned to walk. After he learned to walk, you encouraged him to walk alone on flat, safe surfaces. After gaining experience, you started walking on inclined surfaces, going down stairs, running. Now you walk together on rough terrain and help each other climb mountains. Apply the same patience in scientific experiments. Always choose the resources appropriate to the level of understanding and discreetly prepare your notions for the next experiment.

Gadget Time / Intel Labs Introduces AI Diffusion Model, Generates 360-Degree Images from Text Prompts

LDM3D is industry’s first generative AI model to deliver depth mapping. It has the potential to revolutionize content creation, metaverse and digital experiences.

Intel Labs, in collaboration with Blockade Labs, has introduced Latent Diffusion Model for 3D (LDM3D), a novel diffusion model that uses generative AI to create realistic 3D visual content. LDM3D is the industry’s first model to generate a depth map using the diffusion process to create 3D images with 360-degree views that are vivid and immersive. LDM3D has the potential to revolutionize content creation, metaverse applications and digital experiences, transforming a wide range of industries, from entertainment and gaming to architecture and design.

“Generative AI technology aims to further augment and enhance human creativity and save time. However, most of today’s generative AI models are limited to generating 2D images and only very few can generate 3D images from text prompts. Unlike existing latent stable diffusion models, LDM3D allows users to generate an image and a depth map from a given text prompt using almost the same number of parameters. It provides more accurate relative depth for each pixel in an image compared to standard post-processing methods for depth estimation and saves developers significant time to develop scenes.”

–Vasudev Lal, AI/ML research scientist, Intel Labs
Why It Matters: Closed ecosystems limit scale. And Intel’s commitment to true democratization of AI will enable broader access to the benefits of AI through an open ecosystem. One area that’s seen significant advancements in recent years is in the field of computer vision, particularly in generative AI. However, many of today’s advanced generative AI models are limited to generating only 2D images. Unlike existing diffusion models, which generally only generate 2D RGB images from text prompts, LDM3D allows users to generate both an image and a depth map from a given text prompt. Using almost the same number of parameters as latent stable diffusion, LDM3D provides more accurate relative depth for each pixel in an image compared to standard post-processing methods for depth estimation.

This research could revolutionize how we interact with digital content by enabling users to experience their text prompts in previously inconceivable ways. The images and depth maps generated by LDM3D enable users to turn the text description of a serene tropical beach, a modern skyscraper or a sci-fi universe into a 360-degree detailed panorama. This ability to capture depth information can instantly enhance overall realism and immersion, enabling innovative applications for industries ranging from entertainment and gaming to interior design and real estate listings, as well as virtual museums and immersive virtual reality (VR) experiences.

On June 20th, LDM3D won the Best Poster Award at the 3DMV workshop at CVPR.

How It Works: LDM3D was trained on a dataset constructed from a subset of 10,000 samples of the LAION-400M database, which contains over 400 million image-caption pairs. The team used the Dense Prediction Transformer (DPT) large-depth estimation model (previously developed at Intel Labs) to annotate the training corpus. The DPT-large model provides highly accurate relative depth for each pixel in an image. The LAION-400M dataset has been built for research purposes to enable testing model training on larger scale for broad researcher and other interested communities.

The LDM3D model is trained on an Intel AI supercomputer powered by Intel® Xeon® processors and Intel® Habana Gaudi® AI accelerators. The resulting model and pipeline combine generated RGB image and depth map to generate 360-degree views for immersive experiences.

To demonstrate the potential of LDM3D, Intel and Blockade researchers developed DepthFusion, an application that leverages standard 2D RGB photos and depth maps to create immersive and interactive 360-degree view experiences. DepthFusion utilizes TouchDesigner, a node-based visual programming language for real-time interactive multimedia content, to turn text prompts into interactive and immersive digital experiences. The LDM3D model is a single model to create both an RGB image and its depth map, leading to savings on memory footprint and latency improvements.

What’s Next: The introduction of LDM3D and DepthFusion paves the way for further advancements in multi-view generative AI and computer vision. Intel will continue exploring the use of generative AI to augment human capabilities and build a strong ecosystem of open source AI research and development that democratizes access to this technology. Continuing Intel’s strong support for open ecosystem in AI, LDM3D is being open sourced through HuggingFace. This will allow AI researchers and practitioners to improve this system further and fine-tune it for custom applications.

More Context: Intel’s research will be presented at the IEEE/CVF Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Conference (CVPR) June 18-22. For more information, refer to “LDM3D: Latent Diffusion Model for 3D” or view the LDM3D Demo.

Gadget Time / IBM Brings Generative AI Commentary and AI Draw Analysis to the Wimbledon Digital Experience

IBM AI Draw Analysis creates a new statistic for tennis, offering deeper insight into a player’s potential path to the final

BM (NYSE: IBM) and The All England Lawn Tennis Club today announced new features for the Wimbledon digital fan experience that will launch at this year’s Championships.

A new Artificial Intelligence (AI) feature, leveraging generative AI technology from IBM watsonx, will produce tennis commentary for all video highlights packages during Wimbledon
In a first for tennis, the IBM AI Draw Analysis feature will also provide a new statistic to define how favourable the path to the final might be for each player in the singles draw
The new features expand on the suite of digital tools for fans on the Wimbledon App and wimbledon.com. They are the latest examples of how IBM and Wimbledon are using technology to help fans engage with The Championships on a deeper level.

IBM AI Commentary

The new AI Commentary feature will provide fans watching match highlights videos with audio commentary of key moments, along with captions, which they can toggle on or off. The tool has been designed to give fans a more insightful experience when catching up on key moments from matches with highlights videos on the Wimbledon App and wimbledon.com. Its introduction this year is a step towards making commentary available in an exciting way for matches outside of Wimbledon’s Show Courts, which already have live human commentary.

To develop the new feature, experts from IBM iX, the experience design partner within IBM Consulting, worked with The All England Club to leverage foundation models from watsonx, IBM’s enterprise AI and data platform, to train the AI in the unique language of tennis. Generative AI built on these foundation models was applied to produce narration with varied sentence structure and vocabulary to make the clips informative and engaging.

IBM AI Draw Analysis

Another new feature IBM will introduce this year is the IBM AI Draw Analysis – the first statistic of its kind in tennis – which uses AI to define how favourable the path to the final might be for each player in the singles draw. A player’s draw favourability will be indicated with a rating along a scale, based on factors including the player’s match-ups against potential future opponents and how the player’s position in the draw compares to competitors. This new insight will help tennis fans to uncover anomalies and potential surprises in the singles draw, which would not be apparent by looking only at the players’ ranking, inspiring more debate and engagement in the fan community.

Usama Al-Qassab, Marketing & Commercial Director, The All England Club, said: “We are constantly innovating with our partners at IBM to provide Wimbledon fans, wherever they are in the world, with an insightful and engaging digital experience of The Championships. This year, we’re introducing new features for our digital platforms that use the latest AI technology from IBM to help fans gain even more insight into the singles draw and access commentary on a wider variety of matches through our match highlights videos.”

Jonathan Adashek, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications for IBM, said: “IBM is bringing new layers of insight and engagement to the 2023 Championships through the use of innovative new tools, powered by foundation models and generative AI from watsonx. We’ve seen first-hand how these technologies have the power to help major sporting events like Wimbledon to grow their audiences through outstanding digital experiences. The AI and data platform that IBM is using to create unique fan experiences for Wimbledon is the same technology that we’re using to drive business transformation with clients across all sectors and industries.”

The new features being introduced this year will add to the suite of AI-powered digital tools for fans available on the Wimbledon App and wimbledon.com. They include the IBM Power Index Leaderboard, IBM Match Insights and Personalised Highlights Reels and Recommendations. Using over 100,000 data points from every shot played across the tournament, analysed by IBM’s Watson AI technology on IBM Cloud, these digital features are designed to make it easier for fans to understand which players to follow, how they compare to their opponents and who’s likely to win. Fans are kept updated and engaged throughout the tournament with fresh insights tailored to the players they’re following.

The Championships, Wimbledon will run from July 3 – July 16, 2023. To see the technology in action, visit wimbledon.com or download the Wimbledon App on your mobile device, available on the App Store and Google Play Store.

Gadget Time / Lenovo Ships One Million Units from its First European In-House Manufacturing Facility In Hungary

Lenovo (HKSE: 992) (ADR: LNVGY) has reached the milestone of manufacturing and shipping one million workstations and servers from its first purpose built in-house manufacturing facility in Europe, just over one year after it opened its doors in Budapest, Hungary.

After 10 months of construction during the pandemic, the facility opened in June 2022 to support customers throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) with their requirements for server infrastructure, storage systems and high-end PC workstations. As of June 2023, the facility has provided solutions to more than 1,000 customers in 69 countries and seen the scale and speed of operations accelerate over the past year. Over 180 customers have visited the site, enabling deeper collaboration, transparency and understanding with Lenovo customers across the EMEA region.

Szabolcs Zolyomi, Factory Site Leader at Lenovo, commented: “Opening the Hungary facility was an important milestone for Lenovo, extending our international manufacturing operations and representing significant economic potential for both the private and public sectors in the country. The achievement of shipping one million units is testament to the past year of internal and external collaboration with our employees and customers. We have been able to respond to customer needs more effectively, with greater efficiency and control over product development and supply chain operations, all while continuing our commitment to sustainability and supporting the local community.”

Since opening, the site has seen a 20% increase in headcount, with 15 different nationalities represented in the workforce community. Lenovo has subsequently been recognized with an award from the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Trade for creating the most jobs in the country.

Through the Lenovo Foundation, the company’s philanthropic arm, the facility has also formally partnered with the local community to provide volunteer work and technology to local schools, as well as take part in monthly blood donations in partnership with the Hungarian Red Cross Foundation.

The Budapest manufacturing facility was built with sustainability in mind and since opening has increased the building heating isolation, completed installation of a lighting sensor systems, and optimized air compressor waste heat utilization. The second phase of solar panel installation is now underway to increase capacity to 4 megawatts, which produces the equivalent amount of power of approximately 12 fuel tanker trucks of natural gas. Throughout the year, heat from across the production house is rerouted to keep the manufacturing space warm. In winter, cold air from outside the facility is used for cooling purposes, and expansion of this process is now planned throughout the factory. Reusing heat in this way has decreased energy costs by 14%.

With a goal of reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by FY2049/50, Lenovo has seen CO2 emissions on shipments decrease by more than 90% due to reduced freight miles, thanks to the facility’s location at the center of Europe. This combined with innovative manufacturing processes, such as Lenovo’s patented low-temperature solder process, is helping the company work towards achieving its science-based climate goals.

As the leading provider on the TOP500 list of supercomputers for the last five years, Lenovo has continued to service customers hosting some of Europe’s largest supercomputers, with added capabilities from the Hungary facility. This includes the Barcelona Supercomputing Center in Spain, Leibniz Supercomputing Center in Germany, and SURF in the Netherlands, amongst many other high-performance computing centers.

The Hungary facility is part of Lenovo’s global manufacturing of 35 sites across eight markets that serve customers in 180 markets – including Argentina, Brazil, China, Hungary, India, Japan, Mexico and the USA. Lenovo is widely recognized for its global hybrid manufacturing model that includes a mix of both in-house and contract manufacturing.

Gadget Time / Building 100 Years of Wonder! Artist Lakwena Maciver Unveils Giant LEGO | Disney Mural in London

To celebrate the launch of the new LEGO® | Disney Castle and Disney’s 100th anniversary, female artists Lakwena Maciver, Amy Jones and Kristin Texeira have created four giant castle window murals in LEGO brick inspired by the storytelling possibilities of the new LEGO set
The first of four murals was revealed at Tower Bridge, in London, UK and is over 4.5m high and constructed of over 220,000 LEGO bricks
Families will have the chance to celebrate their love of LEGO | Disney by building the other three murals in Manchester, Paris and New York City

To celebrate the launch of the new LEGO® | Disney Castle and honour 100 years of Disney, London based artist Lakwena Maciver has unveiled her latest artwork, Kaleidowaves, a 4.5m tall castle window inspired by the storytelling possibilities of the new LEGO set. The Kaleidowaves mural was today unveiled in London with Lakwena’s children, Aroko aged four and Makelo aged six, placing the last of the mural’s 220,000 LEGO bricks in place.

The new LEGO | Disney Castle is a celebration of the playful joy and creativity that the LEGO Group and Disney have inspired in families around the world over the past 24 years. Since the first LEGO Winnie the Pooh set was unveiled in 1999 to the hidden time capsule in the new LEGO | Disney Castle, the two brands have helped fans share the wonder of Disney storytelling by inspiring children, and adults, to reimagine fan-favourite moments through LEGO play.

Talking about the inspiration for her mural, Lakwena referenced the Disney characters that inspired her creativity as a child, and those she sees sparking the imagination of her two sons today: “When I lived in Ethiopia as a child in the 90s, there wasn’t access to many films, so we would watch Disney videos on repeat. Later, when living in the UK, I also remember visiting my uncle in the Ashdown Forest, which inspired Winnie the Pooh, and we would play Pooh Sticks on Pooh Bridge. And now, with my young family, films like The Lion King offer a nice way for me to talk to my children about our ancestral homeland. The idea of magical possibilities that Disney captures so well definitely had a big impact on my imagination as a child, and has therefore informed my adult work and life as an artist.”

Lakwena’s design is part of a series of four murals created with two other artists that were inspired by Disney as children, Paris-based Amy Jones and US-based artist Kristin Texeira. The murals feature some of their favourite Disney characters from the last 100 years including Mickey Mouse, Cinderella, Woody, Ariel, Tiana, Mirabel, Buzz Lightyear and Daisy Duck, who also now feature in LEGO | Disney sets, surrounded by the artists’ own unique style.

The three remaining murals will be available for families to build together at free events on July 7th-9th near the LEGO Store, Paris; July 14th-16th at the Manchester Arndale and July 27th-29th at Pier 17, The Seaport in New York. There is also an opportunity to create a LEGO castle window online at www.LEGO.com/castle, or visit a local LEGO Store to take part in LEGO | Disney building activities (visit www.lego.com/store for more details). The four complete murals will then be displayed at LEGO House in Billund from 23rd August 2023.

Talking about her approach to designing her LEGO mural titled Through the Magical Glass, France-based artist Amy Jones said, “I grew up near Orlando close to the Disney magic, so I will always feel a nostalgic connection to the inspirational world of Disney and its characters. Within my design, I wanted to remind people of the stories behind these Disney characters in my own creative style, full of exuberant colour and shapes, brick by brick.”

Meanwhile for New York artist Kristin, memory and nostalgia are fundamental to her work as she paints to preserve moments in time or to pay homage to people. Talking about her mural, called Stained Glass Memories, Kristin said, “I loved watching Disney films growing up. From Sleeping Beauty to Cinderella and Mulan, they left me craving to see more of the world and collect more stories from its people. One of the earliest Disney films I remember watching was Fantasia and it really stuck with me. The intertwining of music and colour in the film has been influential to the bringing together of colour and memory in my artwork. When I started work on my LEGO Disney mural, I began by experimenting with the bright bold colours of LEGO bricks and developed these into colours that represent my own memories from the films.”

The new LEGO | Disney Castle set is a homage of the iconic castle at the beginning of all Disney movies. The 4,837-piece features not only the castle building, but also references from 14 classic Disney films over the last 100 years, such as Steamboat Willie and Snow White (the first Disney Princess) to The Princess and the Frog and Moana. The set comes complete with eight minifigures, representing some of the Disney Princess characters and their male counterparts. Inside the castle is various rooms including a kitchen and dining room, a ballroom and bedroom. Each room has references to Disney films and characters and there is even a secret turret for fans to discover a Disney time capsule with references to the 100-year history. Outside, the castle is decorated with fireworks.

Talking about her role as the Creative Design Lead for LEGO | Disney, Benedikte Stamp said, “Over the last century, Disney has created some of the world’s greatest stories which are loved by generation after generation. Just like these stories, LEGO play transcends age, language, culture and interests to inspire millions of children to build and create anything they can image. As a designer, it’s my role to bring together the magic of the two brands and give fans of all ages the chance to celebrate their love for Disney stories through building.”

The new LEGO | Disney Castle set will be available globally via LEGO Stores and at www.LEGO.com/Castle for LEGO VIP EA members from 1st July 2023 and for all from 4th July 2023 at the recommended retail price of $399.99 / €399.99 / £344.99. During 1st to 9th July anyone who purchases select LEGO | Disney sets over £95/$/€100 in LEGO Stores or LEGO.com will also receive the LEGO | Disney 100 Years Celebration set for free, which features a podium, a movie screen, projector (which lights up), a desk and a Mickey Mouse minifigure.

Gadget Time / Cisco Study: Canada is a Global Leader in ‘Digital Readiness’ but Not All Canadians Benefit Equally

Cisco Digital Readiness Index shows that continued focus and investment in connectivity, skills, and cybersecurity needed to ensure no one is left behind

Canada ranks 17th out of 146 countries in Cisco’s Global Digital Readiness Index, which measures a country’s preparedness to capture the opportunities of a digital economy.
British Columbia ranked first in digital readiness, followed by Quebec and Ontario.
Continued investments in connectivity, skills and cybersecurity are critical to maintain and secure Canada’s digital leadership and support digital equity and inclusion.

Today, Cisco released the findings of the Cisco Canada Digital Readiness Index, a comprehensive study that measures Canada’s ability to capture the opportunities that digital capabilities and investments create. While Canada performed strongly on a global level, ranking 17th out of 146 countries, the Cisco Canada Digital Readiness Index revealed that there are significant discrepancies across provinces and territories.

The study focuses specifically on the performance of each of Canada’s provinces and territories, measuring data across seven components: Basic Needs, Human Capital, Business and Government Investment, Ease of Doing Business, Start-up Environment, Technology Adoption and Technology Infrastructure.

“The Digital Readiness Index looks beyond technology to help us understand Canada’s performance and get a holistic measure of our progress towards a digitally capable, equitable and inclusive society,” said Shannon Leininger, President, Cisco Canada. “Globally, Canada has a strong and consistent year-over-year performance, meaning that we are continuing to invest in areas that will help us advance and remain competitive. Together, the public and private sector should continue to work together to make digital readiness a priority and maximize the economic and social benefits for all Canadians.”

Improving Digital Readiness for all Canadians Must Be Top Priority

To maintain and secure Canada’s digital leadership and build a more digitally equitable and inclusive society, the Digital Readiness Index provides guidance on how Canada can improve overall readiness through continued investment in three key areas:

Improve connectivity to close opportunity gaps and ensure digital equity and inclusion.
Maximize Canada’s human capital advantage by investing in digital skills to build the most highly trained labour force.
Close the cybersecurity readiness gap and improve Canada’s security resilience.
“Digital readiness is not static. Canada’s path to digitization will require ongoing investment and focus to ensure the benefits of digital readiness are felt equally by all, especially those in Indigenous, rural and remote communities,” said Leininger. “If we do not address our domestic gaps, regions in Canada that perform at the lowest levels of digital readiness will fall further behind, decreasing Canada’s digital leadership position.”

Digital Readiness Scores by Province and Territory

While Canada’s global digital readiness score is strong, the provincial and territorial results indicate that progress varies across the country and not all Canadians have equal access to digital opportunities.

  • British Columbia received the highest digital readiness score in Canada driven by its first-place ranking on Ease of Doing Business, Start-Up Environment and Technology Adoption.
  • Quebec (2nd) and Ontario (3rd) followed closely behind with top scores in Business and Government Investment (1st and 2nd respectively), and strong scores in Technology Adoption and Technology Infrastructure.
  • Alberta (4th), Prince Edward Island (5th) and Yukon (6th) all scored in the top five on Basic Needs and Ease of Doing Business. These regions also ranked in the top three for Human Capital due to strong labour force participation and a high youth population (AB and YK) and net migration (P.E.I. and YK).
  • Nova Scotia (7th), Manitoba (8th) and New Brunswick (9th) fell just below the national average. NS and MB performed well in Ease of Doing Business due to low internal trade barriers, while NB ranked in the top five on Basic Needs due to positive housing affordability.
  • Northwest Territories (10th), Saskatchewan (11th) and Newfoundland and Labrador (12th) fell below the average digital readiness score. Business and Government Investment and Human Capital scores were close to average for N.W.T. and SK, while NFLD had above average scores in Basic Needs, Business and Government Investment and Start-up Environment.
  • Nunavut ranked the lowest in Canada, reinforcing the need for all levels of government to address Basic Needs of the population and build a solid and long-term foundation for digital readiness.

To view the full Canada report and/or individual provincial and territorial reports, visit the Cisco Canada Digital Readiness Index webpage.

Methodology

The Digital Readiness Index is a holistic model that looks at a total of 25 metrics across the seven components of digital readiness. Metric data are from reputable sources including Statistics Canada, CRTC, CMHC and more. The model uses a “z-score” methodology, measuring how many standard deviations above or below the mean of a particular metric/score. If a score is bel

Gadget Time / Fujitsu and Mizuho start trials for generative AI to streamline development and system maintenance operations

Fujitsu and Mizuho Financial Group, Inc. (hereinafter Mizuho) launched joint verification trials using Fujitsu’s generative AI technology to streamline development and maintenance operations of Mizuho’s system. The trials will take place between June 19, 2023 and March 31, 2024.

Generative AI technologies offer enormous potential to transform the ways we work, and with rigorous verification may soon allow companies to optimize various work processes and tasks.

Recognizing the promise of this technology, Mizuho is now exploring ways to incorporate AI in its operations to improve the quality and resilience of its systems during the development and maintenance phase.
Fujitsu is actively promoting research and development into generative AI models to support system development and maintenance technology under the framework of its “Fujitsu Kozuchi (code name) – Fujitsu AI Platform,” which supports users globally to accelerate the testing and deployment of advanced AI technologies.

Within their joint trials, Fujitsu and Mizuho will focus on applying Fujitsu’s generative AI technology within the development process of Mizuho’s system, with the aim of verifying the AI’s effectiveness in automatically detecting errors and omissions in system design plans and audit processes.

Fujitsu started offering an AI core engine for generative AI on June 9, 2023 via “Fujitsu Kozuchi (code name) – Fujitsu AI Platform.” The generative AI technology used in the joint trials combines this AI core engine for generative AI with Fujitsu’s expertise in engineering.

The two parties further plan to develop a technique to automatically generate test specifications from system design plans improved with the aforementioned technology. To strengthen work process resilience, Fujitsu and Mizuho further plan to apply generative AI technologies to work processes and tasks including the generation of source code, system development, and maintenance.

Fujitsu, in cooperation with Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) (1), Tohoku University (2), and RIKEN (3) in May further announced the start of a R&D project of a distributed training of Large Language Models (LLM) (4) on supercomputer Fugaku, with plans for release in fiscal 2024.

Fujitsu will leverage research results from this project to promote practical research in the industrial world and apply them to Mizuho’s system to further improve quality and efficiency in Mizuho’s operations.

Gadget Time / Disney and Pixar’s New Film ‘Elemental’ To Show in 4K HDR on Samsung Onyx Cinema LED Screens

4K HDR mastered “Elemental” is now exclusively available on Samsung Onyx, creating a viewing experience like never before

Samsung Electronics today announced that Pixar Animation Studios has mastered its new animated film “Elemental” — released globally on June 16 — as 4K theatrical High Dynamic Range (HDR) content available exclusively on Samsung Onyx, the world’s first Cinema LED screen. Those who view the film at an Onyx theater will enjoy a more captivating and vibrant viewing experience through next-generation picture quality with 4K theatrical HDR.1

Samsung Onyx, the world’s first Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI)-certified cinema display for theatrical exhibition, is an LED screen that provides exceptionally vivid color and the most detail-rich content. It transcends the traditional projector-based systems that have been the industry standard for more than 100 years by overcoming limited contrast ratio and brightness, delivering millions of additional colors that traditional projection does not.

Pixar, an Academy Award® winning animation studio, mastered the film in 4K theatrical HDR to exemplify its bright, sharp, rich and detailed imagery, extending beyond the capabilities of Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) theater-based projectors. Additionally, Pixar pairing its reach with Samsung’s visual technology expertise has resulted in the largest cinema LED presence of any brand in the theatrical space. Moviegoers can enjoy 4K HDR mastered “Elemental” exclusively on Onyx screens.

“Pixar is known for pushing the boundaries of both technology and art, continuing that legacy with our latest film, Elemental,” said Dominic Glynn, Senior Scientist at Pixar. “With Onyx, Samsung has taken a bold leap forward, deploying extraordinary technology at a scale that enables a compelling step-change in cinema image quality. For the first time, audiences will be able to experience our highest brightness, rich, detailed HDR imagery on large, sharp cinema screens that showcase Pixar’s most ambitious work to date. HDR cinema delivers a genuinely fresh visual experience to our global audiences, and the filmmaking teams at Pixar are excited to share this unique version of Elemental with the world.”

Starting with “Elemental,” Pixar plans to continue mastering 4K HDR content for Samsung Onyx to ensure the film is viewed the way creators intended for the best possible viewer experience.
