Pacif-i – the world’s first smart pacifier that monitors a baby’s temperature

Mar 18 2015

Blue Maestro introduces Pacif-i, the world’s first smart pacifier that monitors a baby’s temperature and transmits the data to an app on a parent’s iOS or Android smartphone or tablet.

To begin with, Pacif-i, the Bluetooth Smart Pacifier will be shipping early in 2015. The product development has been completed and we are progressing with the final arrangements for mass production. We opened it up to pre-orders in early December but closed it again due to high demand. Pacif-i is a Class IIa Medical Device in Europe so we are not able to “make it available” to the market until it has received its CE Mark and we wanted to limited the number of people waiting for this process to be completed before their orders shipped. Especially since the process is a little out of our hands and in the hands of the Notified Body who is reviewing our systems. This has been a little slowed up due to the Christmas break but we are expecting positive news on this front in the New Year. The release of Pacif-i will be an important milestone for us given the amount of time we have spent in making sure this is a great product.

Pacif-i overview

With a temperature sensor built into the pacifier’s silicon teat, Pacif-i transmits temperature data via Bluetooth Smart (sometimes referred to as Bluetooth 4.0 or Bluetooth Low Energy) to a free app on an iOS or Android smartphone or tablet. The app determines when the temperature is the most accurate and then time-stamps and plots the temperature data in a graph. Via the app, parents can record when medication was administered, set-up alerts/ reminders and share the data with carers and medical professionals.

The pacifier also features a buzzer alarm that can be activated via the smartphone when it has been misplaced or hidden by a child.

Pacif-i features

Some of the features you can look forward to include:
• a transparent body with a colourful over-moulded front;
• the ability to turn it on and then leave it running for at least 9 months or more;
• the ability to take a baby’s temperature directly from the smartphone;
• the ability to record medication you give your baby and to overlay this on the graph of their temperature.

Pacif-i specifications

Pacif-i also features an in-built proximity sensor that allows parents to monitor the pacifier’s location and so be alerted when their child wanders off. Within the app, parents can set the distance, up to a range of 20 metres, for the alarm to be triggered when this is breached.

Using a low-energy Bluetooth Smart chip, provided by leading chip developers Nordic Semiconducter, Pacif-i has a battery life of more than one year.
